In 1655 Capt. Nathaniel Batts, contraced with Robert Bodnay of Norfolk County, Va., to go to Batts' land on the southwest branch of the Pascotank River, N.C., for 5 months work to build a 20x20 foot house, two rooms with chimney and buttery. This land was bought of Yausapin Indian "King" Kiscutaneah in the mouth of the Chowan & Roanoak Rivers.
Batts was: a young man, a fur trader with the Indians for beaver furs. In 1672 an traveling Quaker met Batts and called him governer of Roanoak area and trader with the Indians.
Is Nathaniel kin to the c1750's Batts family of near Wilmington, N.C., which wed into the early John and Joshua James family of near Wilmington? Is there a Sage connection too?
