My grandfather Joe Terrell Baty (b.1910 - d.1999) was originally from Lavonia, Ga. but re-located to Greenville, SC. His father was named Luther Lane (b.? - d. 1976), but Im not sure where he originated from.
Story is, in the early 1800's two brothers lived in Nevada. They were named Beatty (or Beaty or something along those lines). Apperently the brothers were not fond of each other, and after a heated argument, one of the brothers moved east. He signed is signature very sloppily, and people commonly mistaked his last name as 'Baty', and soon he adopted the name.
Does anyone know anything about this? I know it is sketchy and far-fetched.
