The 1880 census shows a Phelps County, Missouri family:
Carl Baty 27 yo b. MO [parents' birthplaces not shown] Matilda Baty 21 yo b. MO, wife Leona Baty 1 yo b. MO, dau William S [?] Baty 8/12 yo b. MO, son Dan H. Baty 81 yo b. KY [father b. VA; mother b. VA] - Dan was a widow and was listed as Carl's uncle.
Looking backwards to try to identify Carl's parents I am wondering if this is right????
1860 Oregon Co., MO census Wm. S. Baty 44 yo b. KY Nancy L. Baty 40 yo b. VA Carrol Baty 9 yo b. MO --- and other children.
1870 Phelps Co., MO census Wm. T. [?] Baty 54 yo b. KY Nancy L. Baty 52 yo b. VA Carol Baty 18 yo b. MO Jacob S. Baty 8 yo b. MO --- no other children in the household.
So were William and Nancy Carl/Carol/Carrol's parents?
Looking to the future, Carl remained in Phelps County, MO. In the 1910 census he replied that his father was b. IL and his mother was b. Ala. In the 1920 census he replied that his father was b. KY and his mother was b. IL.
Either I am following the wrong person or Carl was very confused about his ancestors!
I am not particularly interested in Carl Baty, per se, but rather in the fellow who in 1880 was listed as his uncle: Dan H. Baty b. 1799 KY. Therefore, if I can identify Carl's father, I assume that he would be a brother of Dan H. Baty. It's also possible, I think, that Dan H. Baty might have been a GREAT-uncle. If Carl Baty was b. ca 1852 and Dan H. Baty was b. 1799, there is ample room for another generation between the two men.
