Research William Beetham 1809-1888
I am doing some research on William Beetham, 1809-1888, son of Joshua and Catherine Beetham. Born at East Ardley Grange, Yorkshire. In 1834 married Mary, daughter of Philip Horsley then lived at Frimley Hill, Surrey. Emigrated to New Zealand in 1855 on the 'William and Jane' with 6 sons and 3 daughters.
Studied art in London while his family was growing up? He paid long visit to the continent, painting portraits as far a field as St Petersburg, at the Court of the Czar. He had as many as 16 pictures hung at the Royal Academy at one time.
Apparently he was an accomplished portrait painter I was wondering about his style and the style in fashion at the time?, who trained him? Is there any record of his work in St Petersburg? Is there records of his work at the Academy?
If you could please point me in the right direction as to how I could find out more on William as I have only information from when he arrived in New Zealand. Perhaps we can swap information if that helps your archives? Any information on William Beetham and his art work would be greatly appreciated!
