Hi. I am trying to find information on the name "Bennitt" spelled with an "i". According to legend in my branch of the family, we trace our heritage back to a Daniel Bennett of New York State, sometime in the 1760's. The legend is that there were many Bennett families in that area of New York at that time, and that during the Revolution, there were problems with getting mailed delivered to the wrong families. Our branch of the family apparently decided to change the spelling of their name to "Bennitt" with an "i". Is there anyone out there who can verify this, or tell me if they have also heard this story? Or are there other known origins of that spelling?
