Garden Grove Express
June 29, 1893
Garden Grove, Iowa
LOCAL.
The executive committee of the Old Settlers Ass'n met Monday and fixed the
date of the Reunion Thursday, Aug. 24.
Uncle Thomas BOYCE has purchased a new thresher of L.H. THOMAS & Co. He will
be prepared to thresh grain in short notice at the proper time.
G. SANFORD has moved his gallery to the lot just west of Wales & Young's meat
market. A new brick building is going up on the old site, to be occupied by
S. E. WILSON's barber shop.
Rev. A. THORNBRUE, Sec. of the Preacher's Aid Society of Des Moines, will
preach at the M. E. church Sunday morning and evening. He is said to be a very
able preacher.
Communion services will be held at the church at Leroy next Sabbath afternoon
at 3 o'clock by Rev. Robt. BEER. Also communion services at the Presbyterian
church at this place on Sabbath, July 9.
Mr. and Mrs. CLAMPET are rejoicing in the arrival of a boy at their house.
He is rather diminutive, but he makes things lively just the same. The little
fellow came last Friday.
They have organized a Sunday school at the school house near Mrs. Harriet
LILLARD's place. The school meets at 2 o'clock p.m. Mr. HUGHES is the
superintendent. The school starts out under the most favorable auspices.
The Davis City Steam Boat Co. (limited) Str. Belle will make two regular
trips Sundays for the season of 1893. One in the a.m. after the regular train
from the North and one in the p.m. after S. School.
F. M. FREEMAN, Pres.
E. W. TEALE, Sec'y
Elisha BETHARD took a sudden notion to leave this part of the country Monday
evening. The atmosphere of Iowa is not near so congenial to his health as
that of Missouri, he therefore packed his grip and flew. The old, old story:
"The maid loved not wisely, but too well."
We have received an invitation to attend the commencement of the Highland
Park Normal College at Des Moines, which takes place June 25. The school has
been in progress only three years. It must be in a prosperous condition for
there were enrolled this year 1,314.
John BERRY went in ahead of all others in the cowboy race on his horse
"Poison," arriving at the Wild West show at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Emmett ALBRIGHT
arrived less than 2 hours later. All the horses are reported in good condition.
Rev. A. KNOLL has been appointed by the Elder to supply the Garden Grove
charge, from now until Conference. Mr. KNOLL has just graduated at the Indianola
college, and is a talented man and a good preacher. He has been in the work
for the past three or four years and will make the charge a good preacher.
The social at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. S. METIER Friday evening was
largely attended and a good time had by the large company present. An abundance
of the good things of life were furnished by the hostesses, Mrs. METIER and
Mrs. J. S. BROWN, and those present realized that it was a good thing to be
there. The receipts were $12.35.
Will WARREN has sold 395 acres of his farm in Franklin township to Bismark
LANE of Story Co. The price paid was $29 per acre. Mr. WARREN expects to move
to Jefferson Co., Ohio. We regret very much that he has concluded to leave
us, but as both his and his wife's people live there it will be pleasanter for
them.
The storm last Wednesday evening was not so severe here as in other places.
While we had a very heavy rain, very little wind accompanied it. In the south
and west parts of this county and in Missouri the trees were blown down and
houses were badly wrecked. One person is reported killed in Lamoni. So far
this part of our county has never been visited by a very severe storm.
