Many Thanks for the information you sent. I also found a Jesse H. Bethea on the 1850 El Dorado, California census, but his age is 23. I think the J. H. Bethea (Berthea) I seek is older.
Lay's Regiment (20th Confederate Cavalry) enlisted boys 17-18 years old and older men 45-50 years old. I also found a John H. Bethea in Alabama who was forty years old in 1860.
I will use your information as I seek confirmation on exactly who POW J. H. Berthea was.
In regards to Jesse and Matthew joining the Confederacy even though their family was mostly living in the North; I have a distant cousin, born in New York, who enlisted in the 3rd Georgia Cavalry and served throughout the war for the Confederacy.
