Dear David
I think you have got my message.Castilho a portuguese writer who lived in Faial for a period of time was astonished by the fact that the servants used to have the evening gathering with masters talking about the day events. That was not possible in continental Portugal! A democratic lesson.!In Azores, do not judge the thingsby appearances. The modesty of the houses, and the oldest ones are realy modest, only speakes for the fact that it was a poor society. You can trace a noble pedigree in such a modest family not touched by the grace of fortune. That's why is so amazing to make a research on this matter.I have already found mainly in the XVII c. people of noble origins who died in misery without possibility to pay the burial!
If you look into Chateaubriant ( Mémoires d'outre tombe)pay attention on the island of Graciosa meeting he had. The description of the local authorities in the old uniforms is touching!
If you need any translation to portuguese, please make me know, or ask it by post to my adress: João Goulart de Bettencourt,
