My own ancestor William BEVAN, sail-cloth weaver, of Bedminster (Somerset) was also found in the Long Ashton Workhouse.
1851 census: "William Bevan, [Pauper], Mar., 56, Weaver, [born] Bedminster Somet." (The stated age is not accurate.)
I now have the death certificate for William. He died in the Union Workhouse, Long Ashton, Bedminster, on 15 March 1854. His occupation is given as "Floor Cloth Weaver", age as "64" (not correct), and the cause of death as "Paralysis"--perhaps a stroke.
His wife Elizabeth, who was younger, lived on for about another 20 years. She is found on the 1861 and 1871 censuses, living with unmarried daughter Elizabeth, a school teacher.
Another descendant of William & Elizabeth BEVAN has contacted me, and together we are piecing together this family. If you are also a descendant, please email me at the address given by by name above. --Jane Elderfield
