James Birnie was born in Rathen in December 18th 1796 according to one descendent so consider date unconfirmed but close to that. His parents were Robert Birnie and Betty Dyce [maybe]. He came to Montreal in 1816, joined the Northwest Fur Company in 1818 and arrived at Spokane House in November of that year. He married Charlot Beaulieu, daughter of a freetrader in the Kootenais -- amazing woman! In 1846, Birnie resigned from the Hudson's Bay Comapny [the two companies had merged] in frustration and set up a store at Cathlamet, Washington. He is the founder of Cathlamet.
He had a son named Alexander [A.D.Birnie], born 26th August 1842 at Cathlamet. I dont remember if this alexander Birnie ever married, and don't know name of wife if he did. But he was in Cathlamet, I think -- Nancy
