I am trying to link my ancestor FREDERICK J. BIRRELL back to Scotland. According to the 1850 U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedule, he was born about 1810 in Scotland and died Aug. 1850 in King George County, Virginia. He was living in Virginia by June 25, 1836 when he married NANCY BRISSEY. They were the parents of JOHN, born about 1837; AGNES, born about 1838; and SARAH, born about 1839.
On the General Register Office for Scotland Web site, I located a FREDERICK BIRRELL, christened Dec. 7th 1810 in the Parish of Gretna, County of Dumfries, Scotland. His parents were JAMES BIRRELL and MARGARET MUSGRAVE. They were married Dec. 11th 1808 in Gretna. JAMES and MARGARET were also the parents of GEORGE, born 1809; JENNY, born 1812; THOMAS, born 1814; JENNY, born 1816; BENJAMIN, born 1818, died Feb. 18, 1894. He married JANE JOHNSTON (or JOHNSTONE); JOHN, born 1821; MARGARET; born 1823; and RICHARD, born 1827.
Does anyone know anything about this family and whether JAMES and MARGARET BIRRELL’s son FREDERICK immigrated to the United States and could have settled in Virginia.
