I have been researching the Phipps of Parke Co., Indiana, and have come across Norman Blacketer several times. In addition to the information provided by Susan, before Norman married Winney Phipps there was a Lucy Blacketer who married Ira Phipps in Parke Co. on March 4, 1838.Ira and Lucy's second son was named Norman Phipps.
Norman Phipps enlisted with the 14th Indiana regiment on Jan. 23, 1864, and Norman Blacketer enlisted with the 14th Indiana regiment on Jan. 26, 1864.Norman Phipps, who survived the War and died many years later in 1914, had an older brother named Hiram H. Phipps, who joined the same regiment and died of disease in 1865.Norman Blacketer is listed as "Died March 23, 1864; disease."Norman Blacketer probably never saw action, and like so many others died from disease.
In addition to these two, Norman Blacketer had 2 step-sons, William and Zachariah Crigger (Creger) who both joined the 14th Indiana regiment about the same time in 1864.William died of disease in 1865, and Zachariah died in battle near Petersburg in 1864.
Norman Blacketer's second wife, Elizabeth Creger (maiden name was Welch) was the widow of John M. Creger (sometimes Crager, Crigger, or Creager), who died in 1854.Elizabeth was John's 2nd wife: they had the 3 children of Zachariah, William, and Sarah.John's 1st wife was a Sarah Keller, with whom he had one daughter - Eliza Jane Creger.Eliza Jane married George Phipps (brother of Ira Phipps) in 1854.Eliza Jane and George are my GGG-grandparents.
