TOPSHAM - John W. Blackie, 86, a former resident of West Bay Bridge Road, died Saturday, April 9, 2005 at Mid Coast Medical Center.
He was born in Topsham, June 23, 1918, a son of Charles W. and Lillian A. White Blackie. He graduated from Clinton High School. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II.
Mr. Blackie married Marion A. Cheney on June 27, 1941. She died in August 1958. He later married Harriet Bergquist Edgecomb in September 1965. She died June 15, 1993.
He was employed at Hyde-Windlass in Bath and at Bowdoin College, where he worked for 33 years, retiring in 1984. He was a life member of the American Legion Post in Waterville, former member of the Odd Fellows, Bath Country Club and the United Methodist Church in Topsham. He enjoyed playing golf in the Bath Men's League and at Apple Valley Country Club in Lewiston. He also enjoyed camping and fishing.
He was predeceased by a brother, Henry Blackie, and a sister, Frances LeClerc.
He is survived by two daughters, Carol Fowler of Spartenburg, S.C., and Penny Brown of Durham; a stepson, Stanley Edgecomb of Topsham; two stepdaughters, Joyce DeVito of Georgetown, Mass. and Joan Haley of Mass.; a sister, Inez Rogers, of Waterville; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick.
A graveside interment service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Riverview Cemetery, Elm Street Topsham.
