The Bloomer Family
The name Bloomer means 'Iron worker' and the Bloomer family have been involved in the Iron industry and mining over the years. One tradition states that the Bloomer's descend from Joseph of Arimathea who owned Tin mines in Britain in the 1st century. The earliest Bloomer's in the British Isles that research has found are the Bloomer's of Gloucestershire who were Lords of the Manor. The Bloomer's are believed by some descendants to have been of Jewish origin. It is from this area that Robert Bloomer was born in the early 17th century. He was the founder of the Bloomer family in New York.
There is some confusion about the wives of the first Robert Bloomer in America. In contemporary records there is a Robert Bloomer that had a wife called Rachel. Different researchers had suggested the following surnames for her: Rachel Bullis, Rachel Brundage or Rachel Hart. Rachel Hart was the sister of Hartwig Moses also known as Edward Hart who was originally from Germany. They belonged to the Jewish ha Levifamily. Rachel with her brother Jonathan and sister Judith were early pioneers of America. Other Hart relatives remained in England and Germany and some of their grandchildren also emigrated to America.
The Bloomer Family Association of Ed Rucker has this information in regards to the first Robert Bloomer:
" Robert Bloomer b. Abt 1634, Birmingham, England, m. (1) Abt 1670, Rachel ??, m. (2) in New England, Sarah ??, b. - -1642, d. ??. Robert died 1794?. Robert was living in Rye, Westchester Co., New York where he was a proprietor of Peningo Neck with Thomas Merritt. Robert is listed in a 1698 census and again with Sarah in a 1710 census living at New Rochelle, New York. The 1698 census listed his name a "robert blumeart, with his wiff racheall blumeart." Robert was granted his house and fields at Rye to his son Robert Jr.

This shows some of the confusion of those trying to trace the Bloomer family from Robert. In fact Rachel is the wife of the second Robert Bloomer and his father Robert married Sarah. She is not the second wife of the first Robert Bloomer. The children above are the children of the second Robert Bloomer and his wife Rachel Hart. This second Robert Bloomer was the father of Robert Bloomer who married Elizabeth Sutton, the daughter of John Sutton and Elizabeth House.
