Dear Pheya;
In reply to your message, I will try to summerize as much facts that I think will help you regarding the Carl F. Blumberg Family.
First, my copy of the "Klan Book" is so fragile that I would be afraid to copy it.I suggest that you could contact the Heritage Museum in Seguin, Texas to see if they have a copy.Author and publisher - Blumberg, C.F. "The Carl F. and Catherine Ruff Blumberg Klan Book".
Seguin, Texas: New Braunfels Zeitung Print, 1938. You might want to call the Seguin Vistors Center at 830/379-6382 for information.
I am the Great Great Great Grandson of Carl F. Blumberg.
In the "Klan Book" it states that Carl F. was born in Germany at the Russian border which is probably Polland today.The year was 1798.He died in 1853 of Yellow Fever and is interred in the Schumannsville Cemetery at Schumannsville, Texas - North of Seguin and 3 miles south of New Braunfels.Carl F's education and principle profession was that of a school teacher.
As a side bar, I am also the Great Great Great Grandson of August Wilhelm Schumann, founder of the German settlement of Schumannsville.Both he and Carl F. Blumberg are interred in the Schumannsville Cemetery.
In the fall of 1845, Carl F. and his wife, Catherine left Germany and arrived at the port of Indianola, Texas a few days before Christmas of that year.They had seven children: Julius, Bertha, August, Henrietta, Fritz, Ernest, and Hulda.August, described as very gifted and intellitgent, who was 16 years old at the time stayed behind in Germany to continue on with his studies.I am from the Ernest branch of the Blumberg family tree.
The "Klan Book" tells a summarize story of the lives of Carl F., Catherine, and each of the children in their years of hard living in early Texas.The theme that runs through the lives of the family was that of an extreamly loving and close-knit family, especially so between the brothers - Fritz and Ernest. With respect to August, he settled in Hanover, Germany in the profession of academics.
His son, Hugo chose the same profession and greatly excelled his ancestors in the accomplishments,it is said.
By the year 1937, the only living relatives and desendants of the August Blumberg branch in Germany were Fritz, a celebrated and distingushed lawyer, his wife - Ida, and his daughter, Elizabeth.
On September 19,1937, the first reunion of the Blumberg Klan was held in August Blumberg's Park at McQueeney, Guadalupe County, Texas.The Blumberg's had developed much of the McQueeney area.There were 600 seats provided for guests, all were taked, and there were 183 cars counted.At the time of this reunion, in the year 1937, there were a total of 1,168 members of the Carl F. Blumberg Klan.This total was made up of 400 relatives by marriage and 768 relatives by blood. A total of 92 relatives had died.
The professions of the klan members mention in the book were primarily teachers, a few ministers, a couple of manufactures, and one lawyer - Fritz in Germany.Carl F. and his grandson, C.F. of the Fritz A. branch were the most like of each other.They were both teachers, book and magazine writers, composed music and sang, preached as laymen, built school houses; Carl F. in Germany and C.F. in Seguin.
With respect to your question of do I know of our earliest ancesters being jewish, I do not know. Certainly, the name Blumberg is typically associated as being jewish.However, in our Blumberg family, there is no document to support Jewish ancestory. From the Klan Book, Carl F. and his family were devoted and practicing Christians and believed that they would meet their loved ones in heaven. Also in the Klan Book, there is a reference point suggesting that Jews were not of their kind. Personally, I know that there were no jewish traditions or customs practiced or handed down. To the best of my knowledge, not even male circumcision was performed until my generation. If we do have any jewish ancesters, it would be so far back in generations that only DNA analysis could determine.
Pheya, I didn't mean to be so wordy and I hope the above information helps in your Blumberg ancestory search.Please let me know if you turn up anything regarding our family tree.
Best Wishes, Gary
