My grandfather, Earl Boak was a brother to Ulysses Grant Boak. The two brothers ran Boak's garage in Venice, PA.Ulysses Grant Boak went by the name "Tony."I remember flying with him in his plane and visiting him at the garage.
Earl had three sons, Gale (a professor of art known as "Bill" and still living in Florida), Jack (an amazing musician, trumpeter, and arranger long deceased), and my father, Gordon Earl Boak.Gordon's love was also in the arts and he studied acting at Carnegie Tech and later became a pastor.Gordon married Vivian Marie DuCarme and they had three children:Bruce Gordon Boak, Bonnie Beth (Boak) Lewis, and Betsy Joy (Craig) Boak.Gordon Earl was a Presbyterian Pastor serving churches in Monroeville, Steubenville, OH, Grove City, Pa, and Glenshaw, PA.He passed away in Washington, PA in November 2004.His wife, Vivian is still living in Grove City, PA.
I now live in Rochester, but it is Rochester, NY and not Pennsylvania.I married Martha Louise (Oerter) of Bay Village, OH in 1971.We have been blessed with two children:Joshua Gordon Boak a newpaper reporter now writing a book with Bob Woodward in Washington, DC and Hannah Meredith (Boak) Christides who lives in Chester Springs, PA.Meredith and her husband, Jason Christides have a new daughter, Haley Renee.
Betsy Joy (Boak) Craig teaches drama and theater. Her son, Gordon John Craig carried on the "Gordon" portion of the naming tradition.Gordon is in Cairo, Egypt but will return to college for football season. He is a record setting field goal kicker for Dickinson College.
I remember attending the funeral of Clyde Jules Boak as a boy.He had a wonderful white mustache.
My recollection is that Ulysses Grant Boak and Roger Boak were in the oil business. They owned a number of wells in Washington County, PA.They operated a small refinery and eventually produced gasoline for a fledgling bus line that ran between McDonald and Canonsburg. At the time of the bus line they also sold home power generator units. Ultimately this morphed into the auto business. Although they sold Willys Knights early on, they eventually sold Plymouths and Desotos. Earl and Meredith (who went by Edith) lived near the garage and there was an oil well in their back yard.
Bill Boak had two sons and a daughter. The sons were Roger and Craig and the daughter was Meredith.Roger now lives in Texas and Craig is in North Carolina.Roger was given his name from Roger Earl Boak.
