This Doris "Bogard" was born in Denmark (according to 1910 US Census) and was "taken in" or adopted by my great aunt, Maude Zella Davis and her husband Fred Orr White. They lived in Sabula, Iowa (near the Indiana border). She is listed as Doris White on the 1910 census. In her adoptive mother's obituary in 1918, it says that her biological mother died and she was adopted by the White's.No mention of her biological mother's name or the name of her biological father or what became of him.
I couldn't find any info about a Bogard/Boggard family in Iowa, so thought she might have come to Iowa on an orphan train? or something?Obviously, even if there was an adoption record, no one in Iowa would release it to me.
I think she might possibly still be alive.I ran all Doris females (any last name) born on her birthdate through the social security death index, came up with 4 ladies and ordered all their original social security apps. She is not one of the four reported in the ssdi. She could be alive, or perhaps died young before social security even existed.I have no idea who she married, or if she married.
I know Fred Orr White remarried after Maude's death, but don't have a name for new wife.I don't know if Doris stayed with Fred Orr White and his new wife, was sent away, went with a new family or married young. She was 13 years old when Fred Orr White "accidentally" shot Maude Zella Davis in the head with a shotgun and Maude died.I have the original newspaper article (1918) of the shooting and a copy of the obit for Maude. The accidental shotgun blast was witnessed by Doris as the family was walking to the garden to pick some peas. The shooting was ruled accidentally and from the articles, there was no suspicion of foul play.
I am desperately trying to find Doris Bogard/Boggard/White or any of her descendants.I just want to share information and learned what became of the little girl.
Any pointers would be appreciated.
Incidentally, I went to your website and pulled up the kitchen photo where the ghost might appear. You got me there.I screamed out loud, sweat for 10 minutes and then wondered if the Sheriff's Department was going to show up because one of my neighbors heard a woman screaming (me).It was hilarious.I tricked a co-worker today and had him concentrate on the table...It shocked the heck out of him too and now everyone in my work group (20 people) were asking for the webaddress so they could mess with their friends and family members. Thanks for the scare. It was very popular in my office today.
