"Mrs. M.C. Mahaffey Beloved Citizen, Succumbs Friday
Mrs. M.C. Hahaffey, beloved citizen of Mount Vernon, died at the home of her son, M. M. Mahaffey, in Mount Vernon Friday night following an illness of only a few days.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Baptist Church with Rev. John E. Whitt, pastor of the local church, in charge of the service.He was assisted by Rev. S. M. Williams, Methodist minister. Interment followed at the City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Fred Hogan, Bill Campbell, Raymond Hill, Ralph Cannaday and Phil Campbell.
Innumerable friends and her devoted family feel keenly the loss of "Mother Mahaffey," whom they have loved, honored and revered as a fine example of Christian motherhood, respected citizen and active church worker for more than four score years.She was a devoted member of the Baptist church for 74 years.
Born March 20, 1856, in the Greenhill community, near Mt. Pleasant, Martha Carolina Mahaffey was a citizen of Franklin County for 84 years, moving at the age of five to Mt. Vernon, where her father, Col. Thomas Bolin, and mother, Mrs. Sophie Bolin, were prominent pioneers of the county.
On January 22, 1873, she was united in marriage to M. M. Mahaffey, the ceremony being performed by the late Rev. J.F. Johnson, prominent Baptist preacher, who was one of the writers of the Constitution of the State of Texas.
Mr. Mahaffey preceded his wife in death on September 6, 1901.Eight children were born to the union, six of whom survive.They are W. T. Mahaffey, M. M. Mahaffey, Charles B. Mahaffey, all of Mount Vernon; Dr. Howard Mahaffey, Hillsboro; Mrs. L.T. Youngblood, Bronte Texas; and Mrs. T. J. H. McLeod, Oglesby.Two other daughters, Mrs. Water McAuley, and a small child, Floy, died a number of years ago.
Mrs. Mahaffey was the last member of a fine group of brothers and sisters, who were P. M. Bolin, C. H. Bolin, Judge J. W. Bolin and Col. Dan Bolin, the latter being known and loved throughout the state as a historian of note, Mrs. W. T. Johnson and Mrs. John T. Hargrove.

Bolin, Blackwell; Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Youngblood, Bronte; Miss Eva Branch, Marshall Branch and Mrs. Mac(?) Branch, Mr. Pleasant; Mr. and Mrs. Can Bolin McAuley, Big Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Laska Middleton and daughter, Jane, DeKalb; Mrs. W. J. Galt and son, Jay, Oklahoma City; Mrs. Georgia Bolin Martin, Snyder; Bolin Mahaffey, Taft; Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Mahaffey, Pittsburg; Mrs. Emma Mahaffey, Brashear; Dr. Myrtle McDowell, Mrs. Jewel Bryarley Clark, and Mrs. Lucy Bryarley Moore, Sulphur Springs, and Mrs. T. J. H. McLeod of Oglesby."
