My reasoning that the Bonewitz, Bonawitz as my ancestors spelled it, is My Great Grandmother always said we were Polish and came from Germany along the Polish border, but Adam Bonawitz came over in the 1700's. I have a genealogy on our Bobawitz family and Oby Bonawit mentioned Wends, I did much reading and studying on the Sorb/Wend History and my husband and I even went to the Wendish Museam in Bautzen, Germany where I was told Bonawitz is definately Wendish. My 3rd great grandfather John Bonawitz, who by the way was a gun maker had in his Vendue 1829, a book on Prussia, so at the Wendish Museam they said my Bonawitz's probably came from Brandebberg area in Germany which was part on Prussia, Bautzen is in the Kingdom of Saxony which has a lot of Wendish Towns but was never in Prussia. Cottbus is in Brandenberg. Are you from my line of Bonawitz, After they came to America they settled in Berks Co. PA. Later John went to Schuylkill Co. Some of his siblings went to Dauphin Co. then to Ohio and scattered in U.S.
