Hi Ian,
Many thanks for responding to my posting.
For John Boothroyd, Cartwright, I have a copy of the marriage for his son Alfred to Hannah Senior in the Parish Church in the Parish of Almondbury, County of York. Both Alfred and Hannah were living in Honley at that time = Sept 25, 1853.
From IGI I obtained Alfred’s christening as 13 April 1834 in Almondbury, Yorkshire and his parents are listed as John Boothroyd and Susannah.
From another person on Ancestry.com and a One World Family TreeI obtained the name of Susannah Cockin and their children’s names.
Allen, 1814
Hannah 1816
Mary Ann 1818
Sarah 1823
Maria 1825
John1828
Frances 1830
Alfred 1834
I also found a marriage date for John and Susannah – Sept 2, 1813 in Almondbury, Yorkshire.
In the 1841 census living in the Lockwood Buildings,Honley I found Alfred at 8 (1833) and Fannah at 11 (1830) with Susannah Bates, 40 (1801)and William Bates 30 (1811), Publican.
In 1851 census living in Will Hill, Honley I again found Alfred at 29 (1822), Wheelwright living as a lodger with Hannah, 34, (1817) and her husband John Hallus, 38,(1813).Hannah is his sister, now married with 3 children.
So my information for Alfred is all substantiated but that for John Boothroyd and Susannah Cockin is dependent on info from others and IGI.
For Hannah Senior, a lady in England has come back to me on that and, as you suspected, the New Mill is correct and fits with what the census records of 1861 state as Hannah was born in Yorkshire the writing of New Mill could simply be a long tail on the ending l, not an s but Yorkshire is very clear.
What she found in the old church records was that Hannah Swallow daughter of Ann Senior of New Mill bapt Jan 12, 1834 at New Mill Christ Church record number 119.Also Ann Senior of Hey bottom also had Samuel born august 21, 1837 and John born Dec 28, 1828 both baptized June 2, 1838.No father’s names on these. These names and dates fit a family of Jonathon Swallow and Ann Senior (Hannah and the boys had the Senior last name as did she) living at Scholes, Cartworth both in 1841 and 1851.Note on the marriage certificate of Hannah Senior to Alfred Boothroyd his father is given as John Boothroyd, her father is not given, a line is drawn through the space for it.Hannah was not in the 1841 census but was in the 1851 census with the family.I have not been successful in finding her in 1841 so maybe she was staying with a neighbor or relative that night.
In the 1861 census Alfred and Hannah live at Bruntcliffe, Morley with their 2 sons, Friend and Ben.Friend married Emma Broadbent and emigrated to Toronto, Canada in the early 1880’s and they are my ggrandparents.I knew her when I was quite young.I cannot find Ben after the 1871 census, In 1871 Hannah seems to have died as a housekeeper, Mary Ann Lockwood is now living with them.
I guess we are all finding our way in the late 18th century re the confusing number of Boothroyd’s and Susannah Cockin has me totally stumped, there does not seem to be much on the name Cockin at all.
Hope some of the above assists you and thanks for the link re New Mill, it was quite interesting.
Lee
