Good morning Carolyn,
It has been a while since you posted this message and I suspect you have already found the information you are looking for, if not, go to the Social Security Death Index at Genealogy.com
There you can find the birth and death dates of your dad, Eugene P. Mayeux, b. August 12, 1912 SS# ISS LA 437-09-4551, d. February 1972 in LA - no residence zip code on the SSDI
Eugene Mayeux b. January 02, 1889 SS# ISS LA 435-01-5752, d. December 1965 in LA - no residence zip code on the SSDI. He may be your grandfather.
You could send for a copy of your dad's original SS Application. Download the printed form and mail to SS Admin. with a check for the specified amount.
You could also contact the funeral home that handled your dad's final arrangements and ask for a photocopy of his death certificate. We obtained photocopies of my parents' death certificates from the funeral home for $3 each that listed their parents' names.
Another very good source of birth and death dates is cemetery records. Married couples are most often buried together with their birth and death dates engraved on their tombstones. Using information found in published cemetery records, I have been able to link many of my ancestors to their families.
On a personal note, before he died, I researched Anward Mayeux's family. Anward lived and died in Evangeline Parish, LA. I found his grandparents, M/M Cyrus Mayeux, buried in the Te Mamou Cemetery near Ville Platte, LA, but only their death dates appeared, and unfortunately, the lady's given name was not shown. Although her death date appeared on a metal cross as 195_, the last digit was covered by a screw. Anward's wife, Dean, remembered that "Gram", as she was called, was a Juneau, and she lived to be 90+ years. I have not been able to identify "Gram" Juneau. She may also have been called Lydia or Alidia or Alicia, probably from the Avoyelles Parish area.
Cyrus Mayeux was bn. Abt. 1863 in Marksville and died October 1944, bur. Te Mamou Cemetery, Ville Platte, LA. I est. "Gram" was b. Abt. 1867 and died bet. 1950-1959, bur. Te Mamou Cemetery.
Another good source is the Louisiana Secretary of State Birth/Death records. Sometime ago my hard drive crashed and I lost the URL but it is easy to find. As I recall, I paid just $5 for information on my grandmother.
Best regards,
