18th Feb. 1678/9 p. 360 Thos. Bottom plt. agst Ralph Pool deft. in an obligation signed by Pool and sealed - the penalty for non-performance being Lb50. The plt contacted to work for sd. Pool as a shoemaker in VA for 4 years the deft. paying 450 lbs. tob. per year for support of plt.'s wife and children in England. The deft. having served almost his time faithfully and to his master's great profit, has received nothing and his wife and children are in great want, and he prays judgmt. for the same agst. deft. Mr. Elias Osborne, atty. for deft. prays it be referred to a jury. Mr. Jno. Blayton and Mr. Elias Osborne being acquainted with the deft.'s handwriting were asked if the contract was in Pool's hand and said it was, as did others. The jury returned a verdict for the plt. Jas. Minge foreman. Judgmt. is awarded the plt. agst. the deft. for Lb70. Mr. Pool appealed to Gen'l court.
