I saw Leatha's posting on the GenForum http://genforum.genealogy.com/bottom/messages/60.htmlhttp://genforum.genealogy.com/bottom/messages/60.html where you mentioned a Charles Bottom. As luck would have it, I am looking for one who may have been in MO for a while. He was in Caldwell Co, TX by Jan 31, 1869 where he married Sarah Louisa Brock b November 23, 1850, in TX (prob in Brockville, now Bristol, Ellis Co, TX).
According to the 1870 Federal Census for Williamson District, Travis Co, TX, Charles was a 31 year-old carpenter b in KY.Apparently many of the husbands of Brock women were Masons, and I would not be surprised if Charles was one also.
The head of the household in that Census report was James Canfield, 62-year-old carpenter b in TN.Also there in that household along with James Canfield and Charles Bottom:
1.Sarah L. Bottom age 19 b TX (surely Sarah Louisa Brock, Charles's wife) 2.Joseph W. Brock, age 63 (probably an error -- surely this was Joshua W. Brock, Sarah's father) 3.EE Brock (probably Elisha Estes Brock, my 2g grandfather and Sarah's brother) age 21 said here to be born in IL, but by all other sources to be b in Ellis Co, TX) 4.Joseph W Brock age 15 b TX 5.Susan Brock age 13, b TX 5.Susanna W. Brock age 8 b TX
Much of this appears fatally flawed or illogical, unless some Brocks joined them for the Census that I do not know about.Susannah, the wife ofJoshua W. Brock Jr age 63 at the census, would herself have been 53, not 13.I don't know who the 8-year-old Susanna W. Brock may have been; Susannah Damron Brock would have been a bit old to have a child at 45, although I suppose it could have happened.I suppose it is also just possible that it was a child (possibly born before wedlock) of Susannah and Joshua's third son, John Robert Brock, who according to our cousin Bea Koons above had had too emotional a parting with his girlfriend, Cassandra Rushing, just before riding off to the Civil War.(He married her on his first leave; her father, an important politician, had been mightily displeased, and Joshua and Susannah took in Cassandra and gave her the job of postmaster which Joshua had held.Later John Robert and Cassandra went to CA and OR.Their oldest son, Joseph Franklin Brock b Mar 29 1863, did predate their marriage.)
Sarah Louisa Brock's father, as I said above, was Joshua Warren Brock Jr, who had married Susannah Damron between 1833 and 1835 near Sarcoxie, MO (now in Newton Co, I think.) Joshua's parents were Joshua Warren Brock, Sr, and Fanny Estes.Fanny Estes's parents were Elisha Estes b 1754 and Mary Herd or Hord.Elisha's parents were Elisha Estes b 1729 Henry Co, VA, d March 1791 Franklin Co, VA and Frances (Fanny) Bottom b 1734, d 1808 Franklin Co, VA.Many of the Estes/Brock clan moved to the Madison/Rockcastle KY area for a while, then on to Washington Community, Franklin Co, MO (near St. Louis) by about 1812 before moving on to the Newton / Barry Co MO area (near Jasper) sometime between 1817 and 1833.
I do believe it is likely that Charles Bottom was a distant cousin of Sarah Louisa Brock's. Because this family seemed to move around in clumps of kinfolk, and they were rather prominent in their area of VA, it also seems possible that they knew they were related. But I have nothing on the other Bottoms, so I'm darned if I know how!
