Children of Samuel Longbottom & Mary Pitman & Cela/Celia Pitman, 1752-1785
This is a correction of previous listings for the children of Samuel Longbottom, Sr., of Nash Co NC who was born before 1733 in Surry Co VA and who died in or after 1803 in Nash Co NC.
Please note the addition of daughter Lucy Bottoms, born in or before 1771, and please note the gradual surname change from Longbottom to “Long Bottom” to “L. Bottoms” beginning about 1755. (1)
The children of Samuel Longbottom, Sr., can be considered in three groups:
(Group 1)
his 3 or more children born 1753-1770 with his first wife Mary Pitman, (1) the second oldest daughter of Benjamin Pitman;
------William L. Bottoms was born 1753-1755 in Edgecombe Co NC (American Revolution service)
------Beulah (Buly) Bottoms was born about 1761, or 1765-1769, (2) in Edgecombe Co NC (she married William Baker, Jr., in Nash Co NC) (2)
------Lucy Bottoms was probably born in or before 1771 in Edgecombe Co NC and lived in Nash Co NC (3)
(Group 2)
the 4 or more children born illegitimately, 1770-1780, of Samuel Longbottom, Sr., and Cela/Celia Pitman, the second youngest (and fifth) daughter of Benjamin Pitman, before they married in 1780;
------Fortune Pitman L. Bottoms was born 1770-1780 in Edgecombe or Nash Co NC (she married Mr. Whiddon before 19 Jan 1805); sister Fortune Whiddon was mentioned first in the 1805 will of Sarah Longbottoms
------Olive Pitman L. Bottoms was born 1770-1780 in Edgecombe or Nash Co NC (sister Olive Pitman was mentioned second in the 1805 will of Sarah Longbottoms)
------John Pitman L. Bottoms (John Longbottoms) was born 1770-1780 in Edgecombe or Nash Co NC, he legally changed his name from Pitman to “Longbottoms” on 14 May 1805, he wrote his will in 1816 and he died 1819-1820 in Nash Co NC (brother John Pitman was mentioned third in the 1805 will of Sarah Longbottoms)
-----(First name unknown) Pitman L. Bottoms, daughter, was born about 1775 in Edgecombe Co NC (she married William Lindsey in or before 1790 in Nash Co NC and she died before 19 Jan 1805) William Lindsey was mentioned last in the 1805 will of Sarah Longbottoms
(Group 3)
and, the 3 or more children born 1780-1785 of Samuel Longbottom, Sr., and Cela/Celia Pitman, the second youngest (and fifth) daughter of Benjamin Pitman, after they married in 1780.
------Brittain L. Bottoms was born 1780-1784 in Nash Co NC (various spellings of Brittain)
------Amos L. Bottoms was born 1780-1784 in Nash Co NC
------Sarah “Longbottoms” was born 1780-1785 and she died unmarried before 14 Feb 1805 in Nash Co NC (she wrote a will on 19 Jan 1805, as Sarah “Long Bottom,” devising to a brother and to two living sisters and I have concluded that she wrote the will specifically to recognize her full brother John Pitman and three full sisters, all of whom had been born illegitimately, and I also believe Brittain and Amos were not in the will as they were apparently born legitimately); she named “brothers” John Pitman and William Lindsey (4) as executors but she did not devise anything specifically to William Lindsey and I therefore concluded that he was a brother-in-law who had married a sister of Sarah, and that her sister apparently was deceased by the time Sarah wrote her will). She was referred to as “Sarah Longbottoms” in court minutes.
Notes:
(1)_Samuel Longbottom, Sr. and Mary Pitman married 1752-1755 in Edgecombe Co NC. Mary Pitman Bottom (sic) died in or after 1769, probably in Edgecombe Co NC. For details about any dates or events, or with questions, please contact me by email.
(2)_Revolutionary War pension applications of William Baker, Jr., and Beulah (Buly Bottoms) Baker, Nash Co NC: age of Beulah in 1844 (pages 8-9, 11 Nov 1844) was given by her as 83 (born about 1761), but the Federal Census indicated a birth of 1765-1769
(3)_“May Court 1792, Temperance Bottoms, base child of Lucy Bottoms be bound to James Lee aged 4 years old until she is 18” (Nash Co NC). Lucy Bottoms gave birth to Temperance in 1788 and Lucy was not in the 1805 will of Sarah Longbottoms.
(4)_I am a William Lindsey descendant also.
Thank you.
Guy
