The Bureau of Land Management records show that Micheal Box and a William Box purchased land in Tippah County in 1838. Later, Thomas Box and Grief J. Box purchased land in Tippah Co. that became Benton Co. MS.There were a couple ofJohn Boxes also purchasing land in Tippah County during the time period. The census of 1840 shows an Elspeth Box living next to Michael Box that is apparently the widow of William Box.Thomas, Grief J. and a couple of John Boxes were enumerated but William Box was not.Instead, Elspeth, without anadult male, appeared in the household next to Michael Box.
1840 Census Tippah Co.
209 28 Box Michael:1 male 60-70 and 1 female 60-70.2 people in household; 1 in agriculture.
209 29 Box Elspeth:1 male under 5; 2 males 5-10; 2 males 10-15; and 1 female under 5; 1 female 5-10; 1 female 40-50. 8 in household; 4 in agriculture.
This may be a false lead, but it seems to me Elspeth Box was likely the widow of William Box.
