Hey Ron,
I've looked at many of those Land Patents and cannot say with any certainty, but would guess they are mostly dealing with the "other" John D. Boyd---John Gordon D. Boyd. I think our John D. Boyd was of modest means.
I would love to communicate with one of John G.D. Boyd's descendants though and see what they really know about his past.
I do know that a John D. Boyd and S.P. Niles (of S. Carolina) paid $10,000 on April 9, 1836 to Choctaw chief Wahtubbee (in Leake County, MS). WOW! that was a lot of money back then. I think this was John G.D. Boyd.
What makes all of this confusing though, is that from what I understand John G.D. Boyd lived near the Attala/Leake Co. line at Rocky Point. My dad was born only a few miles south of there in Renfroe and "my" Boyds still own land all up and down Hwy 25 just south of there as well (and also in Barnes, which is very close). This land was passed down through the years, but I don't know if it can be traced all the way back to one of those patents. From what I can gather, prior generations of our clan (Andrew J. Boyd and his son and my great-grandfather, William Jasper Boyd) must have lived 10 to 15 miles west of Rocky Point between Carthage and Kosciusko---at least that's where most of them are buried.
The one patent that I think may be our Boyd clan would be the 1859 Patent to Andrew J. Boyd. Our Andrew J. Boyd was a county official and a highly regarded citizen in Leake Co. I know he sold Leake Co. land to James Parker in 1867 (either his brother-in-law or father-in-law, probably the former), so that might well have been gained from the patent.
BUT, I'll be danged, John Gordon D. Boyd ALSO had a son named A.J. Boyd---I found this in a deed partitioning the land after his death in 1867 (deed recorded Feb 1870). And apparently A.J. Boyd was an attorney. So not only did we have two John D. Boyd's in the area that were not closely related, but we also had A.J. Boyds in the area, not closely related.
I have never run across ANY of the John G.D. Boyd clan in the Leake Co. Censuses---I only find them buying and selling land. I think they primarily lived in Attala County, but would love it if someone would either confirm this or tell me different.
Matters get even worse: there was a John P. Boyd in the area as well (from S.C.) and sometimes the "P" reads like a "D", further complicating identification on certain documents. I once thought he was my kin since I found a Carthaginan newspaper abstract on a story where he'd stabbed someone. But not to be. (Interestingly, his wife Julia Ann is buried right next to my Boyds at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in northern Leake Co.)
Someday, I hope to either spend more time in Leake County researching the land records to determine where our Boyds' land came from, or pay someone else to do so.
I hope some of this makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions about what I've rattled on about here.
By the way, do you descend from "my" John D. Boyd, the one born in Georgia? If so, how?
Take care,
Greg Boyd
