Burned to Death
Mrs Mary J. Bramlette Magee Osburn
Was The Victim Of Fire
While in her room in the Shafer House near Goddard her clothes take fire and before assistance could come to her, she was burned to a crisp was 75 years old and an invalid. House is saved from the flames with difficulty - victim one of the pioneers of the county.
Mrs. Mary Osburn, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of this part of Kansas, was burned to death Sunday morning at 10 o'clock. Mrs. Osburn lived at the home of her son-in-law W W Shafer, one mile east of Goddard, in this county. She was 75 years old and very feeble. About Half past 9 o'clock Sunday morning Mrs. Shafeer her daughter had dressed her and placed her on a pillow in a chair near a coal stove which was being fed with cobs from a box nearby Mrs. Shafter went down stairs and in a few minutes the house was discovered to be full of smoke Shafer forced his way upstairs and found Mrs. Osburn in a circle of flames Hr rushed down stairs for water and could not get back for the smoke Just then Mr A J Pitinger drove up and he and Mr Shafer climbed into the second story by using a ladder and put out the fire.
When taken out of the room the body of Mrs. Osburn presented a horrible sight Her clothes were entirely burned from her body and her flesh was charred to a crisp.
It is thought that she caught fire while placing cobs in the small stove.
Mrs. Osburn was one of the first women in Sedwick County, and is well known to all the old timers.
Ollie Pittinger and J. W. Pittinger brought the news of her death to the city yesterday. They said that the Shafer house was saved with difficulty.
