Anna Sophia Dorothea Brase was born in Alfstedt Germany in 1836 to Heinrich and Catharine Brase. Anna's brothers, Christopher and Heinrich took schooling in Germany and later became teachers. Anna married Johann Steffens in MO, 1855 and was a farmer's wife. Johann and Anna had several children before leaving Mora MO but moved near Concordia MO where Anna's brothers lived. Most of the children grew up and married in Lafayette Co. MO.
Correspondent, Hope Seider listed the 6 children of Heinrich and Anna Johanna Catharine Brase. Much later, in 1988, I corresponded with Earl Armbrust (of WA) and have records of many Brase descendents as a result. He had accumulated history of most of our Brase descendents in the US, though he is from a different line. Only after Earl provided an Obituary (in German) did I realize that the Brase family came from Alfstedt Germany the home of a different line of ancestos. I found the baptismal record for each of Henry and Catharine's children (except Christoph Heinrich b.1834) in the records at Ringstedt. Catherine’s maiden name was Orthiev according to those same records. I could not find Catharina’s parents. I have seen Schroeder claimed as her maiden name several times but do not know the source. Henry was a tailor and perhaps the name was a misinterpretation of his occupation (schroeder). Earls records showed that Henry and Catharine are buried in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Crete IL.
Charles Hoffman ([email protected]) visits Germany and has quite a few records of the areas where we have common ancestors. He has a Christopher Brase of Gnarrenburg (Ostersode) which appears to be a generation older, but so far don’t see a connection. He has some Steffens back to mid 1600s but he didn’t tell about any Philip or Andreas.
With this hint and some guesswork, I looked in Gnarrenburg. Recently (1998), I did find the parents of Henry Brase (b. 1810). Many of the Cole Camp folks came from that area. (This included Ehlers and Schnackenburg). Henrich (Henry) Brase had two brothers Claus b. 11 Oct 1807 d. 1817 and Christopher b. 12 May 1813. They are listed in baptismal records only and were the children of Christopher Brase and Trin Schroeder. The marriage of Christopher and Trin occurred 22 Apr 1806 in Gnarrenburg and they were the children of Stoffer Brase and Johann Schroeder. This was from LDS film 1188976.
In 1998 Fred Bunge of CA supplied information on the Bunge descendents of Henrich Brase line and I shared my Brase information for his entry of information into Family Tree Maker software.
