The below will of John Pitts, Jr. of Chatham Co., NC wills his daughter Elizabeth Brassel a negro wench named Lett.
Question is:Which Brassel or Braswell did she married?This will was dated 29 Nov 1780 so she was married prior to this date.Thanks for any help, Mindy
The following was copied from a photostatic copy of an unrecorded will in Pittsboro Court House, Chatham Co. North Carolina, in October, 1963.Copied by Mrs. Tom Pitts, 812 Knollwood Street, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Will was written November 29, 1780:
"In the Name of God, Amen, I, John Pitts, Senr. of Chatham County and State of North Carolina, being very sick in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God calling unto mind the mortality of body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die Doe make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of almity(?) God that gave it and my body I recommend to the Earth to be buried in a decent maner northing(?) doubting but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mity(?) power of God and as touching what worly(?) estate wherwith it has blessed God to bless me in this life give demise and dispose of the same in the following maner, first I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved son John Pitts Junr six hundred acres of land lying in Chatham County on the waters of Whitoak (Whiteoak), likewise my gray horse called Bucky, likewise my Negro man named Jos. I give and bequeath to my beloved son Joseph Pitts Six hundred acres of land Concluding the plantation wheron I now live, also my Negro child called Bob, also on dark iron gray colt called ___ ? ___.I give to John Pitts, my son, my whip saw, also my gray mare called Pal, branded L and a Flower Deland.I gave and bequeath to my beloved daughter Mary Lean(?) or Lear(?) my Negro man named Oliver, also I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Elizabeth Brassel (Braswell?) my Negro wench named Lett.I give and bequeath to my daughter Pegey Mimes eleven head of cattle, also I give and bequeath to beloved son Joseph Pitts my bed and furniture and bedstead the bed as I lie on also what hogs belongs to me to be equally devied between my two sons John Pitts and Joseph Pitts, also what corn is on the plantation to be equally devied between the same two also I give and bequeath to my son John Pitts on bed and furniture after his mothers death also I give and bequeath to my son Joseph Pitts my old white horse branded Vs on the sholder also seven head of sheep also on sadle and bridle and shot gun I give to my son Joseph Pitts also all the working tools and the remaner (?) part of the houssel stauf (household staff?) I leve and give to my son Joseph Pitts I doe herby appoint my beloved son John Pitts and my true and trusty frend Elisha Cain executors of this my last will and testament in Witness thereof I have unto set my hand and seal this 29th day of November in the year of our Lord on thousand seven hundred and eighty.Signed by the testor as his last will and testament in our presence and at his request have witteness the same.

I have found two different land purchaes for John Pitts Sr. 700 acres Orange Co., NC (which later turned into Chatham Co.) and the 200 acres in Chatham Co. dated Mar 31, 1780.That mean's there are 500 acres that we do not have record of for in Chatham Co., NC purchased by John Pitts, Sr. - mgp

I've seen the name Elisha Cain before associated with Braswell records in Chatham Co., NC.

Wm CAIN, a grand juror. Ordered that Sarah Braswell be apptd gdn to her children: CYNTHIA BRASWELL, Bleak WILLIAM BRASWELL. Sec. on bond: Elisha CAIN, Archd Cain. Elisha CAIN traveled 50 miles to Hillsborough on county business.
