Hi Karen, There is a lot of confusion about the Brewer/Brooks families.I believe that Joel Brewer's wife was named Elizabeth(Nicy) Brewer.I'm not sure about all their children, but Nicy(1809) and Elizabeth(1818) were two daughters.Elizabeth would have been fourteen when Joel was born in 1832 and Martha in 1833. She would have married Hyman in 1832? at 13 years old.
The problem I have is with Nicy. She lived next door to John and Martha Brooks in 1850 and moved to Randolph County, Al in the late 1850's. In the 1860 Randolph Census, Nicy Brewer was living in the household with a William Jordan and family. This house was very close to John and Martha Brooks house in the same census.
In the 1880 Wilkinson county census she was living with her grandson John Pink Brooks. She is listed in his bible as Nicy Brewer.
She was a Bell in 1880 so I assume she married a Bell between 1860 and 1880. A Nicy Bell was dismissed from the Bethal church in 1875.
If John Pink is her grandson then Martha Ann had to be her daughter and since Joel was born before Martha Ann they both may have been Nicy's children and Hyman the father???.
If you look at the 1830 census, the Hyman Mercer household had two females at about the same age as Nicy and Elizabeth. He may have first married Nicy and later married her sister Elizabeth. Hyman, Elizabeth and Nicy all appear in the Joel Brewer estate distribution in 1843.
Like I said...it's very confusing.
