I've got 6 Jonas Brewers in my database. They drive me NUTS!I am trying to find the father of James Brewer (b 1831 in Westhampton, MA, m 1847 Lee County IL, d 1896, Wheaton IL) who I think is a Jonas.
This Jonas (b1773) who married a MARY Smith has all sorts of red flags and cautions in by database. Thomas Christie (see below) said the father of James was Jonas, whose father was Jonas, whose father was John (Captain).
James went to Williams College but I don't think his father paid for his education. An obit record for the College starts off ""Rev James Brewer was born in Westhampton MA, November 12, 1821.He secured his early education under special difficulties". The historical people say this could mean that his father died, went to the poor house etc.
Thomas Davidson Christie married James's daughter, Carmelite Sarah Brewer.By the way she was quiet a lady. TDC did quite a bit of genealogy research, including a bit on his wife's side. Some of these notes can be found in the MN Historical Society collection of Christie Papers, along with Carmelite's extensive diary.
