There are several sources on this subject. John Brewer, who settled in Annapolis in 1649, apparently came to the colonies from the south of Wales, where his name was spelled Bruere. "Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith" mentions a William Briwere of the town of Isle-Briwere in 1202 as an origin of the name. And "A Genealogical History of the Clark and Worth Families" mention a Drog de Bruviere, from La Bruviere in Flanders, who came with William the Conqueror, as the origin. Of course, it could also simply be that our ancestors made beer.
