Family legend has it that Howell Brewer, ne'er-do-well son of George and Sarah Lanier Brewer, moved to TN and then KY to live out his final years. He presumably died, date unknown, in Owsley Co. KY.I would like to hear from anyone who has DOCUMENTATION or at least a reasonable theory, that this happened.
I have problems with this because: 1) The last known sighting of Howell is on the 1790 census in Randolph Co. NC, at which time he would have been approximately 70 years old. If he moved on to TN, and then KY, it would likely have been with some of his children.
2) We don't know who most of those children were, so this one gets tricky. However, one of Howell's presumed sons, Howell Jr. was evidently still in Randolph Co. for the 1810 census, and another presumed son, Ambrose, was in Moore Co. NC as late as 1815, and doesn't show up in east TN until 1830, (although he might have been there as early as the 1820s -- haven't located him in that decade).
3)This would have made Howell Sr.at least 90 years old when his children began moving into east TN.IF he were still alive, it seems more likely that he would have remained behind -- there were certainly Brewers a-plenty who could have taken him in.
4) Also, IF he managed to make it to east TN, I find it highly unlikely that he would have made it up to KY.That particular line of Brewers went first to Hawkins/Hancock Counties in TN and seem to have started moving up into KY with Ambrose's children -- and I'm SURE Howell was long dead by then.
At any rate, would love to hear from anyone who actually has something substantive re: Howell's supposed remove to TN and KY.
