I descend from Ambrose Brewer's brother Lewis Brewer (b. 1760 Orange County, NC - died 1839 Grayson County, VA.) I am also related to Charity Brewer's husband John "Hollon" (Holland). John's parents were William Holland and Rebecca Russell. I am wondering if Rebecca (Russell) Holland and Lucinda (Russell) Brewer were sisters???? William Holland's sister Agatha Holland married about 1789 to Lewis BREWER, Ambrose's brother, probably in old Montgomery County, Virginia. To add to the confusion, Lewis Brewer was often referred to also as "Lewis Russell". Agatha Holland's father George Holland referred to her in his 1803 Grayson County, VA will as "Agatha Brewer or Russell". We know old Howell Brewer was a ne'er-do-well, and in all likelihood, he left his wife and family and she either took up with a Mr. Russell or one of his sisters was married to a Russell and Lewis spent so much time with them he was referred to as a Russell. The legend that Lewis came to America from Devonshire in 1774 with his mother, and that they were shipwrecked off Cape Hatteras, and his mother married their sponser, a Samuel Russell, cannot be substantiated. I think it is a bunch of nonsense. In all likelihood, Lewis Brewer, since he is cited as a son of Howell Brewer and brother to Ambrose, was in all likelihood born in Orange County, Virginia in 1760. We know Howell Brewer was there from at least 1754 through 1765. I don't know where he was between 1765 and 1790.A Howell Brewer does show up in Southampton County, VA in 1810 and 1820. I'm not sure whether this is our Howell Brewer or his son, or another cousin... Also, there is a Russell Brewer, whom I believe to be the son of Henry Brewer of Ashe County, NC, who married Nancy J. Toliver and moved to Warren County, TN by 1806. Henry Brewer is possibly another son of Howell Brewer. There's a great deal of involvement here with the RUSSELL family that needs to be explored!!!!! Anyone have info on the RUSSELL'S????????
