I have been searching for years for Richard Brewer, birthdate we originally had was March 10, 1833. According to the 1850 census, his birthdate is probably 1838. He is living next door to CP Whited (my grandmother's line) so we believe this household is the correct Brewer household. The parents are Richard (actually listed as Dickman) Brewer and Sally (we believe Hammock from family papers). Okay, father Dickman and Sally were both born in 1814, Sally in Tennessee and Dickman wasn't sure. Richard Brewer grew up and married Catherine Castora "Katie" Miller and he fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. We know that after the CW he spent about three or four years in Virginia living with relatives. He and Katie had a son, David Nicholas, who was born in Virginia (this according to the 1880 census after they moved back to Union County, Tennessee). I searched the 1880 census for Brewers with ties to Tennessee (this census is easily searched on the internet). The only Brewer families I found in Virginia who met my criteria of having had someone in the family born or died in Tennessee were the families of Sylvester Brewer who was age 65 in 1880. He had a large household with 45 yo wife Amelia (probably 2nd or 3rd wife) Several children and grandchildren in residence for a total of 19 people in the household. Also, another household headed by Eli Brewer, born Oct. 20, 1846 in Hancock County, Tennessee. His wife was Martha Jane Clark they later had a son named Richard (yeah, I know it's as common as John). The other family is Oliver Brewer and Elizabeth Louisa Drinnen, Oliver being about 61 years old. This puts Oliver, Sylvester and the elder Richard all about the same age. Brothers? Maybe. Anyway, these three families of whom I know Eli is the son of George Brewer and think Sylvester is George's brothers all seem to be related and constitute the best bet to be the family (or families) with whom Richard and Katie (and children) found refuge after the Civil War. I am hoping to find documentation on Richard's son, David Nicholas, who was born in Virginia and see if it is Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia.
