I have additional information on the Briggs who was probably married to Nancy Brewer and the father of her children found in the 1850 census living with William and Mary Brewer.
Eli Nelson Briggs was living in Covington Co. AL in the 1830 census as was his brother Simeon Briggs. Both were sons of Elkanah Briggs as was my ancestor Michael "Micah" Briggs. Elkanah and Michael were in Butler co. AL.
Eli was in Sumter co. AL by 1841. March 1841, E.N. BRIGGS and William BREWER, Poll list of "Beat of Livingston" Sumter co. AL, election of two Justices of the Peace and one constable. ["Marriages and Other Records, Sumter County Alabama Records, 1833-1841, Nelle M. Jenkins and Elizabeth B. Stegall, 1961, Dallas Public Library]
April 1, 1841, Estate of Wiley SUMERLIN, deceased: William D. SUMERLIN guardian of Calvin F., and Pheaston SUMERLIN with William BREWER and Eli N. BRIGGS security. [Sumter County Alabama Records, 1833-1841, Nelle M. Jenkins & Elizabeth B. Stegall, 1962, from Sumter co. Ala. Orphan's Minute Book 1, from 1839 through 1841, p. 263, Dallas Public Library]
It appears that Eli married Mary Elizabeth Long Jan. 10, 1843 in Sumter county and by 1850 they were living in Choctaw co. AL with son James Briggs age 7. Eliza died and Eli seems to have moved to Clarke co. MS.
Eli Nelson Briggs was mentioned in the Butler Co. AL probate papers of Elkanah Briggs "...and it appearing to the Court that Nelson Briggs, Matilda Matthews are not residents but are of full age..." [March 13, 1854, photo copy in by Briggs folder]
Eli married Elizabeth Carr Jan. 21, 1859 in Clarke co. MS and they had six children. Eli died before the 1880 census when Elizabeth Briggs is found in Smith co. MS with her children.
In 1900 Elizabeth Briggs is found in Caddo Parish LA living with a married daugther and several other of her children including the youngest Simeon Briggs.
In 1910 Elizabeth Briggs is found in Limestone co. TX as are several of her children. She died in Sept. of that year.
William E. Briggs married Eliza Jane Burnes 26 Jul 1855, Yalobusha co. MS.[Mississippi Marriages, 1826-1900, ancestry.com]
Several of Eli's older children also moved to Limestone and neighboring Falls county TX. William E. Briggs, Leroy Mitchell "Lee" Briggs, Mary E. Briggs Hammond and possibly Ann Briggs all lived in Limestone county. Mary and John Hammond moved to Pontotoc Co. OK. Both William and Leroy (L.M.) are found in Company B, 15th Texas Infantry of the Civil War. William E. Briggs received a disability discharge and in the discharge papers he states that he was born in Covington co. AL.
The following sent to me by Gaye Dunlap July 2006. Gaye's aunt Lillian Cunningham had this letter in her genealogy documents. This was the only page found. "15 July 1961 Dear Mrs. Cunningham, I received your letter of inquiry about the Briggs. My father's name was Eli Nelson Briggs. His first son was named James Briggs. Then his second marriage there were 2 sons, Dick and Lee Briggs; 2 daughters, Mary and Anna. His third marriage he had 3 sons, Dave, Ben and myself (Simeon) and 3 daughters. I am the last one left. The others have passed on long ago if there is anything else that you would like to ask me, please feel free to write to me." James was actually by second wife Elizabeth Long and the four others by Nancy Brewer. Simeon was age 96 when he died in 1974 in Limestone co. TX.
I hope there are some who are interested in sharing information on the Briggs family lines.
