My ancestor William Bray or Brey was born 21 Aug 1819 at Towanda PA. According to family tradition his father was a red-haired Irishman and his mother was one quarter Indian. = I have recently found a very likely candidate for his mother, namely Lovina Vanderpool (aka Lavina or Elvina) of the Towanda "pool clan," who seems to match everything we know so far about William Bray's mother (names and ages of her children etc). Lovina had an older son Anthony Johnson b 1814 and she is listed with surname Johnson in the 1820 census (after William was born) so it seems she never married his father. I have found a few Bray and Brey surnames in census for PA and nearby NY counties, but the early census does not include many details. *** If you know of an Irishman named Bray or Brey who could have been near Towanda in late 1818 or early 1819 and possibly capable of fathering a child, please reply.
