I don't know specifically about McDowell, NC, and historically, that may not be the most important thing to know. The Brights migrated first from Virginia into northeastern NC--Currituck and Pasquotank counties. Then, gradually, especially after the American Revolution, they migrated down the coast and west from that into the western counties of North Carolina. They also went to other states, including Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia etc.
The first Brights immigrated from England to Virginia as early as about 1642. Some of my ancestors settled in Lower Norfolk County, Virginia in what is now Chesapeake, VA.In 1696,Richard Bright, presumably the son of an earlier John Bright, received a land grant in Moyock, Currituck Co. His brother, John, migrated down to Bath, the oldest town in the state, about 1700-1704.Henry Bright, presumably the third brother, went down to Currituck and Pasquotank about 1700.
I know quite a bit about the descendants of these three early Brights, but there are gaps in our knowledge. Some of these gaps are caused by the loss of public records early in Virginia and in these northeastern NC countiesduring the Civil War.
I really do want to try to help you if you can tell me what you know, and I will tell you more about specific family lines. If you write to me at my e-mail address, firstname.lastname@example.org, I will be able to give you much more information than what one can do here.
I do think that it is possible to discover how your ancestors are probably linked to these early Brights of the 17th and 18th centuries.
