The estate of Knight and Sarah Taylor of Scituate, RI
Records found at the Scituate Town Clerk's office
Notes on the last will and testament of Knight Taylor, dated January 26, 1814 - Probate volume 4, p. 367
It was a simple will with a strong religious introduction. Basically, Knight left everything to his wife Sarah, his land and his personal estate. He called her "my loving wife," and Knight appointed her as executor on his estate. He said the real estate on which he now dwells was received as a gift from his honorable father Benjamin Taylor.
Administration on Sarah Taylor's estate, also in Probate volume 4. She died on December 1, 1817.
p. 478 - Sarah Taylor widow of Knight Taylor died Dec 1 1817 intestate. Isaac Medbury, one of the lawful heirs of her estate, asked that letters of administration be granted. Richard Taylor and Augustus Winsor both of Scituate and yeoman were appointed as administrators on her estate. She had at the time of her death "divers goods chattels and credits".
p. 479 - inventory on Sarah's personal estate, December 20, 1817
about one ton of cocran? hay under the case $10
birts and stalks, one cow $24, 11 bushels of corn in the ear, desk - bed - bedding, women's apparel, wooling wheel, bibles, baskets, iron pot, pewter ware, tramels, 3 barrels of pickels, etc. much of which I could not read ... for a total of $59.06.
p. 510 Richard Taylor presented charges against Sarah Taylor's estate. Of those owed money included Richard Taylor, Jordan Taylor for his work, Chris Smith, George Randall, Josiah Westcott, Elihu Brown, John Harris, Jonathan Potter, Richard Grayson, and John Potter. The charges amounted to about $10 more than her personal estate was worth.
Previously I had proven that Abner Taylor was the son of Knight Taylor by a land sale deed I found in Scituate that stated in the deed that the land Abner sold was from his honorable father Knight Taylor. I knew from the 1782 to 1810 that Knight and Sarah had many more children than has been found by Taylor genealogists. So I decided to use the same trick, in reverse. I looked in the land evidence book for other Taylors who sold their land after Sarah's death. The main purchaser of this Taylor land was Hopkins Randall of Johnston. So I also looked in the land grantee section under his name. With this research technique I found 4 more land sale deeds for the following heirs and children of Knight and Sarah Taylor, and stated so within the deeds. I have provided the notes on the deeds on the individual pages in this ancestry tree. Here is the list of heirs and children I have found.
Abner Taylor - 1818 land deed in LE book 11
So the heirs not known before and children of Knight and Sarah Taylor are 1) Joseph Taylor, 2) Sarah, 3) Dorcas, 4) Libeus, and 5) Benjamin.
Re: other children
Solomon Taylor had a slew of land records and I did not have the time to go thru these
Smith Taylor - Smith Taylor died the year following his mother, in 1818. There were a few land records in the name of his widow Hannah Taylor. She had been Hannah Hawkins, the daughter of Stephen Hawkins. I did not have time to go thru these land records.
Elijah Taylor - I found no land records for him thru the index book for 1880. I have removed him from my tree as one of their children because Sarah probably was too old to give birth in 1795.
