If your name is Britton or you descend from a Britton ancestor, the Britton Project needs your help. There are several ways you can help us:
1) if you are a Britton or you descend in the male line from a Britton male, then we invite you to consider taking a Y-DNA test and submitting a brief lineage to our project. The test is quick and easy--just a couple of cheek swabs which you return in a special envelope provided by the company.
Once results from the test are in, we will match you to other Brittons with whom you share a common Britton ancestor, as illustrated by the following chart:
You will also receive a list of your DNA matches so that you may contact them and determine exactly how you are related.
2) if you are a woman or a man who descends from Brittons through a female line, then you may participate by finding a male Britton relative to represent your line in the project. He could be your father, your grandfather, your uncle, or your cousin--the relationship does not have to be close--a distant cousin will be just fine.
3) if you cannot find a suitable representative, we hope you will consider making a contribution to support our research. Contributions may be made to the Project Fund by check, credit card, or PayPal:
If you wish, you may specify how your contribution is to be used.
Our greatest need is for money to pay for tests for Brittons in the UK. A match between a British family and an American (or Australian or New Zealand) family is often the only way to determine the English/British ancestry of colonists to the US, AUS, or NZ. This is especially true for 17th century American colonists whose links to the home country have been long forgotten.
Remember that DNA testing is science, not opinion. A match guarantees a common Britton ancestor. Paper genealogy can never provide that level of certainty.
