Dear Mignon,
Wlliam Henry Brodnax and Ann Eliza Withers had the following children:
1.Dr. David Walker Brodnax, b 1815, m ___, moved to Greensboro, AL, then to TX and settled in Rockdale, Milan Co.Hattie M. Collins of Ft. Worth, TX is a granddaughter.
2. Martha Priscilla Brodnax, m ___, had 5 children who died young in Sussex Co. VA.
3. Robert Withers Brodnax b 1828 VA, moved to Greene Co., AL 1850.My various lists state that his name was not included on all lists.
4. Dr. John Grammer Brodnax, b 14 Apr 1829, m 1st Mary Brodnax, dau of Robert Brodnax of "Cascade Plantation" in Rockingham Co., NC and Nancy Russell Wilson, m 2d Ella Burch.
5. Mary Louisa Brodnax, b 30 Mar 1831 Petersburg, VA, d 2 Jun 1897, Huntsville, AL, bur Old Maplewood Cem., m John Monroe Banister DD.
6.William Meriwether Atkinson Brodnax.
7.G. W. Brodnax of Greensboro, NC.
Their are many letters in the John Wilkins Brodnax file in loose papers in the Southern History Collection, Wilson Library, University of North Carolina, one of which is:
New York 29 Nov 1898 from Merriwether Brodnax (NOTE by ME - this is William Meriwether Atkinson Brodnax) to Cousin Annie Lyon.Five of my brothers and sisters died infants in Sussex Co., VA.Youngest born at Kingston 19 Jan 1833.Mary Louisa married Rev. J. Monroe Banister and died in Huntsville, AL 1891.The two oldest were David Walker and Martha Priscilla.Four much younger were Robert Withers, John Grammer, Mary Louisa above and myself,William Meriwether Atkinson.Infants died between sister Martha and brother Robert.
In my book, I do not thinkyou can get better proof than someone naming his brothers included is your ancestor. You will not be the first to claim authority from an old letter naming his brothers. That is proof by family knowledge. As he names the whole family, there is no question of which Meriwether Brodnax wrote the letter.I am sure part of the confusion is the gap in the birth dates of the children. But Meriwether BX explains that too, that they died as infants between sister Martha and brother Robert.Another of the old letters has stated that is the reason they moved from Sussex Co.
My notes are not clear on Robert Withers BX moving to Greene Co. AL.It seems that my note is to check the 1850 censuses which I never did.If he moved in 1850, my guess is that the census taker probably missed him, wherever he was.As land wore out in those days, families often moved to more virgin land.Life was tough back then though in 1850 they had slaves to do much hard work.I hope you concur in that you Robert Withers Brodnax is a son of our William Henry Brodnax.Let me know what you think.
