There appears to have been TWO men named Russell Brown in Charlotte Co., VA.One of them was married to an Elizabeth "Betsy" Unknown, and the other one was married to a Prudence (apparently Prudence Birthright....an apparent member of the Zachariah Birthright family). The Russell Brown who was married to Betsy co-owned some land in Charlotte Co., VA with a Richard Brown, and those two men sold that land to Charles Raine in the late-1700s.
Note: Charles Raine was the guardian of an Elizabeth Brown and a Dorothea L. Brown in the early-1800s or so.See more on them below.
The above Russell Brown and Richard Brown were neighbors with a James Brown. That Richard Brown was apparently: 1) a son of Henry Brown and Elizabeth Gaines, 2) a grandson of William Brown (left his Will in Campbell Co., VA in 1802) and Mary Unknown and 3) a great-grandson of Sheldrake Brown of Campbell Co., VA.I am now wondering if the Russell Brown who married Betsy was another son of William and Mary (Unknown) Brown (though no Russell Brown was mentioned in the 1802 Will of that William Brown), and perhaps that Russell Brown died before William wrote his Will in Campbell Co., VA in 1802 (or maybe Russell Brown had already been given his inheritance before his father William died...I have seen that "scenario" in several families).
The other (apparently) Russell Brown who married Prudence was still alive in 1804.There was a William Brown who left his Will in 1794, and one of his sons was named Russell Brown (and another son was named "Burrell" Brown). It appears that it was THAT Russell Brown who was involved with the sale of some slaves....and that sale mentioned "the heirs of Jeremiah Brown."There had been an "early" Burwell Brown and his brother Jeremiah Brown who were in Prince George Co., VA and then Brunswick Co., VA, and I can't help but wonder if the Russell Brown who married Prudence was a descendant of that Jeremiah Brown (or maybe a descendant of Jeremiah's brother Burwell Brown).I am ASSUMING here that "Burrell" and "Burwell" were two spellings of the same basic given name....but I certainly have no proof of that.Maybe the Russell Brown who was married to Prudence was the one whose father William Brown left a Will in 1794 (and hence, the Russell Brown whose brother was a Burrell Brown).
Note: There was yet another William Brown who was in Brunswick Co., VA, and he left his Will there in 1810.That William Brown was married to an Elizabeth Unknown, and they had a son who was named Burwell Brown. It APPEARS that THIS was the Burwell Brown who was in Charlotte Co., VA in the late-1700s/early-1800s.It is suspected that this William Brown (again, died about 1810 in Brunswick Co., VA) was somehow related to the "early" Burwell Brown and the brother named Jeremiah Brown....but no "concrete proof."
Note: There was a John Brown (married to a Jane/Jean Unknown) who left his Will in Lunenburg Co., VA in 1753, and one his sons was named Manoah/Noah Brown. That son fathered a son of his own who was yet another Burwell Brown. It is not known how if this John Brown was related to the "early" Burwell Brown and the brother named Jeremiah Brown....but some connection is suspected (but who knows)?
The last record that I see for Russell and Betsy (Unknown) Brown in Charlotte Co., VA was in April 1800.Does anyone know what happened to them after that?Does anyone have any information that indicates that the Russell Brown who was married to Betsy was (or was not) related to the Russell Brown who was married to Prudence?
The above Charles Raine was married to Nancy Ann Womack, and a sister of Nancy Ann Womack named Elizabeth "Betsy" Womack married Baker Davidson. The Elizabeth Brown who was a ward of Charles Raine's married a John Davidson in Charlotte Co., VA in 1819, and my research indicates that there is a pretty good chance that this John Davidson was a close relative of Baker Davidson (and he may have been the Reverend John Davidson who was the pastor of Rough Creek Presbyterian Church in Charlotte Co., VA).
As stated above, Charles Raine was also the guardian of a Dorothea L. Brown.I would not be too surprised if she was a sister of the above Elizabeth Brown who married John Davidson. There is a living daughter of a James L. Brown (that James L. Brown was born circa-1900, and he married a Miss Davidson) who is also named Dorothea Brown, and I can't help but wonder if that James L. Brown was somehow from the same family as the earlier Dorothea L. Brown.Perhaps Dorothea L. Brown, her possible sister Elizabeth Brown and the much later James L. Brown were all descendants of the earlier James Brown who was a neighbor of the Russell Brown who was married to Betsy (the Russell Brown who, with his apparent relative Richard Brown, sold that land to Charles Raine).Does anyone know how/if that neighbor of Russell Brown and Richard Brown named James Brown was related to Russell and Richard Brown?
If anyone has any information that might help to "sort-out" the above "mess," I would appeciate it if you would post it here. Thanks!
