Henry Bruen (Bruyn, Bruin) was an escaped slave who lived in Orange County, NY. It is said that he escaped with a brother from whom he became separated. No information on his brother or from where they came. Henry married Carolyn Freeman, a Mohican Indian. Their first son, William Bruen, was born in 1869. William married Frances Quarter, a white woman, and was nearly hung on a tree in Washingtonville, NY. Other children included Jesse (b. 1874), Carrie, Charles (b. 1873), Louise (b. 1879), Arthur and Laura. Not many resources for African-American research. Louise is my great-grandmother. She gave birth to Sadie and John (1906-1998). John was my grandfather. Does anyone know of any Bruen slave holdings?
