John did not serve in the Civil War. His father William Wirt Brumfield was a veteran of the War of 1812. A few of his sons served in the Civil War -- John S., Paris, and Allen were Confederates, while Evermont Ward was a Yank. A few of his sons-in-law served too, on both sides. But no, John did not serve in the war. Around 2003, I wrote a grant to fund the purchase of a modern tombstone for his grave, which I placed at his burial site shortly thereafter. My friend Harold Smith had located his grave several years earlier. John H. is buried at Gill, Lincoln County, WV.
