One last thing. I found James Haden in the 1880 Wythe County census and it lists his place of birth as N.C. His wife was listed as Jane, instead of Eliza, although her name could well have been Eliza Jane, very common. The significant thing is that in their household is one Alverta Sawyers, who is listed as being a step-daughter to James Haden. In the original census record, the name Sawyers is written in and then a line drawn through it. She was listed as being 15 years old, which is within a couple of years of her stated age on Alverta's marriage record. The census says she was born in 1865, her marriage record in 1868. It is very possible that Alverta was the daughter Eliza Sayers Haden by her first marriage.
