All of us researching James are weary, I know, but let me just add one more element to the mix.For those of us interested in James Burden (1740-1806), whom many think might originally have been named Borden*, I want to share the list of the Jameses from Hattie Borden Weld’s 1899 book on the descendants of the original couple who came to America (Rhode Island) in 1635.That would be Richard Borden and his wife Joan Fowle.Actually, Richard’s brother John and his wife Joan came a bit earlier, but Weld doesn’t trace their line down at all.Quite a bit of this family moved to New Jersey within a generation or two.
*It's because of the French pronunciation of the Norman name "de Bourdon" that we think we got from Borden to Burden.
Anyway, I share this because I see all over the Internet, on Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com, where people are identifying James’s parents as John and Elizabeth--or as James and Jane.WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE WE GETTING THAT INFORMATION?(I am not mad; don't read the caps that way.I'm just emphasizing.)If anyone has it, I really wish we all could share it.I have scoured the Archives in Trenton, NJ, and found nothing to prove that our James belongs to either of these couples. In fact, in the list of the children of John and Elizabeth, there is NO James AT ALL.Although there’s a gap in the birth order of children, where he could fit, we can’t just arbitrarily fill him in.Of course, I’m sure I didn’t look at absolutely everything that was there in the Archives. But I looked at abstracts and complete texts of ALL wills and deeds, church records, court minutes, and historical books done earlier by other folks.I CAN FIND ABSOLUTELY NO PROOF OF OUR JAMES’S PARENTAGE.There are so many Jameses that it would be hard in many cases even to know which one a record was referring to.If some family Bible exists, I didn’t find it.If you have it, please let us all know.
Anyway, I share with you a list of ALL the Jameses that appear in the Hattie Borden Weld book. You can see that there are possibilities, but those very possibilities have absolutely no other information on record in that book, nor have I found any more in the NJ Archives:
This information will include the Ref. Number of the James in the Hattie Borden Weld Book, Identifying Information on this James, and to whom he was a Child.I don't repeat the name James each time, because these are all Jameses.
