Your post is old and this is hoping that somebody is still out there.
That said, Catherine (Katharina) Burg married to "Smith" in your post is my Great, Great, Grandmother - or my Grandmother's mother. There is a long standing family mystery surrounding her death.
The oral tradition passed down is that Catherine and her husband Christopher Smith were both killed in an some kind of unknown accident circa 1905 in/or around Cherokee County KS leaving three children (that we know of) orphaned.
Katherine (Katie) born 1896 MO Nealy born 1898 Laura born 1902 Rich Hill, MO (My Grandmother) (A Freddy Burg of 1910 census Waverly, MO is another unconfirmed possible sibling).
We got the name "Christopher Smith" from a Funeral bulletin handout for my Grandmother Laura Smith Riley in 1992. The text quote was, "Mrs. Riley was born March 8, 1902 in Rich Hill, MO, the daughter of Christopher and Catherine Burg Smith."
The orphaned siblings were placed with relatives which is confirmed by census info.
My Grandmother Laura was placed with and raised by John and Susan (Susie) Burg Evans - 1910 census Waverly, Lafayette Co, MO - Catherine's sister.
Nealy was placed with Mike Burg (Catherine's Brother) and wife Margaret also of Waverly. (1910 census)
Not sure yet who Katherine was placed with but she later married Charles Stout and had three Children: Charles - James - and Roselee (1930 census Charles & Katherine Stout - Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas) The Freddy possibility in the 1910 was 22 years old and married (also Waverly MO)
Both Laura and Nealy kept the surname "Smith" for 1910 and 1920 census reports and after which they married and moved on. Also early census records show both claiming both Father and mother were from Germany.
Now the real mystery - I have a photo given to me decades ago by my grandmother Laura of her at age 14 with hand written inscription on the back: First the initials LR for Laura Riley, then hand written "Laura Schmidt" and then "Grandma".
I haven't been able to find any documented info at all on Christopher Smith other than he was an immigrant from Germany and married to my Great Great Grandmother. My guess is that He was originally Christopher Schmidt and later "Americanized" his name to "Smith". (like looking for a needle in a needle stack!)
There are many Burg family members buried in the Cherokee Co Ks area as well as just across the MO border in proximity to Rich Hill but so far haven't found Christopher Smith or Christine Burg Smith. (findagrave.com)
Would like very much to solve the mystery of Christopher (Schmidt) Smith especially for my 90 year old mother Rosemary Riley Phillips (daughter of Laura Smith Riley), before she's gone too. Also, we would like to find news clippings or some other account of the nature of the accident.
If anyone has any info at all, no matter how small, please let me know!
