Richard Burgner, Swiss Cavalryman
Richard Burgener, also spelled "Burgner" in U.S.A. He was a Swiss Cavalryman, probably a Swiss Mercenary. He was in the Battle of Novara on June 6, 1513 and in the Battle of Pavia on February 24, 1525. He probably was born about 1490-1500 in the Swiss Canton of St. Gallen or the Swiss Canton of Valais. Because of this action, Richard Burgener was granted the right to bear a Crest along with his coat-of-arms because of his loyalty and daring in the Battles of Novara and Pavia. His coat of arms are described as follows:
Shield: Azure, with a golden sun, accompained by two golden stars in Chief
Crest: A star of six points,Or between two wings displayed Sable
Motto: Pro Deo Et Regi “For God and Country”
Reference: International Heraldry Books by Johannes Baptista Rietstap, Volume One.
It seems likely that he was the Progenitor of the Burgener
family that settled in Grindelwald, Bern, Switzerland?
