This is my current research on John Burkhalter. I would appreciate any corrections or comments.
JOHN BURKHALTER(MICHAEL1) was born c Feb 06, 1728/29 in Lutzelfluh, Berne, Switzerland, and died 1784 in Wilkes Co GA.He married (1) SARAH MILLEDGE c 1756.She was born c 1740, and died c 1773 in GA.He married (2) ANN NEWSOM c 1775, daughter of SOLOMON NEWSOM and MARTHA MATHEWS.She was born c 1755, and died Bef. 1814 in Sumter Co AL.
John Burkhalter was born in Switzerland in 1729, but his father brought the family to the colony of Georgia in 1735 when John was a youngster. The Burkhalter family lived in Hampstead, south of Savannah, where John would have grown up speaking German. In 1755, his oldest brother Michael received land in the interior of South Carolina. Perhaps the brothers set off together looking for free land.
About 1756 at age 27, John married. There are many unknowns about his marriage. His wife's name has been given as Sarah Milledge, but I have found no evidence of either her first or last name. The place of their marriage and her parents are also unknown. They could have married anywhere from Savannah GA to inland SC to Wilkes Co GA. John and his wife had 8 children before she died about 1773. Families often had land dealings with each other, but John has no recorded transactions with anyone named Milledge.
[Where did the family live from 1756 until 1768?]
In Dec 1767, John was granted 300 acres at the head of Loyds Creek which flows into Stephens Creek. (Holcomb) The grant took effect in 1768 when this area was called Granville Co, later becoming 96 District, and then Edgefield. One record of this grant mistakenly states that it was in Colleton County. (Warren)
In 1770 (no month given) in Edgefield Co SC, Solomon Newsom made a deed of gift of some negroes to his son David which would go into effect at Solomon's death. Included in the deed were the conditions that if David died before he came of age, the slaves would go to son Solomon Newsom and daughter Ann Newsom. Though John Burkhalter was a witness, this indicates that Ann was not yet married to John in 1770. This deed was not recorded until Oct 1790. (Deed Bk 4)
In Sep 1772, John received a grant for 500 acres near Doolys branch on Stephens Creek in Edgefield County. He later sold a portion of this property, but even after he left the county, he retained most of this land. (Deed Bk 20)In March 1773, his land on Buckhalters Creek was named as adjoining William Elliott. (Holcomb)
In 1773, John Burkhalter "of SC" applied for land in Wilkes Co GA which was across the Savannah River from Edgefield County SC. He was given 200 acres on the fork of Big Brier Creek because he had a wife, 6 sons, and 2 daughters, ranging in age from 16 years to 2 months. (Huxford)
In May 1773 in Wilkes Co GA, John made a deed which gave property to his children Michael, John, Jacob, Joshua, Jeremiah, Isaac, and daughters Mary and Barbara. The witnesses were Gresham Woodall and Nicholas Mason. (Early Records of GA) Since the children were age 16 and under, he did this to give his children by his first wife their inheritance, so that it would be free and clear from his second wife and any new children. This deed was not recorded until Jan 1784, the year of his death.
In 1773, John married Ann Newsom, who was 26 years his junior. Surely all of John's 8 children (ages 16 through infant) from his first marriage were with him, so Ann took on a ready made family. Then John and Ann had 3 children of their own before his death in 1784.
During the last year of his life, he set about acquiring the largest amount of land that he had during his life. In May 1784, a survey of 287.5 acres on both side of Thundertrail Creek (?) in Washington Co GA was made for him. The original plat book is still in existence and includes a rectangular drawing of this land. (Dwyer) He also qualified for a grant of 800 acres in Wilkes Co GA, and though he died before it was granted to him, his estate did receive it.
John died in 1784 about age 55, leaving his 11 children ages 27 through 4. Certainly the youngest 3 children were raised by their mother Ann Newsom Burkhalter, but who cared for the next oldest 3 children who were still under age 15? His estate was appraised in Oct 1784. In Wilkes Co GA in 1786, his estate was taxed on 1087.5 acres and 5 slaves (precinct OO), and 575 acres were taxed in precinct PP in 1787. (Hudson) Some of the land fell into Warren Co in 1793 and the family divided the property without administration in 1796. John also still owned a 300 acre tract in Edgefield Co SC. By the deed from their stepmother Ann, this property was claimed by son Michael who sold it to James Quarles in March 1794. (Deed Bk 12 and 20)
Widowed at age 29, Ann remained unmarried for 8 years. Ann married for her second marriage Samuel Wilson on Apr 7 1792. In July 1792 in Wilkes Co GA, Ann returned some of the Burkhalter estate to her stepson Michael, the oldest of John's children. The deed states, "Samuel Wilson and Ann Wilson, now wife of said Samuel Wilson, formerly Ann Burkhalter, daughter of Solomon Newsom Sr Dec'd, for love and respect I bear to my son in law or son Michael Burkhalter for 10 shillings, this deed of gift, 4 negroes, a wench named Agg, a girl named Hanor, a boy named Tom, & one named Squash, which said Solomon Newsom gave to his son David Newsom with condition if said David died without heir, then to be divided between Solomon Newsom the younger & her the said Ann, now Wilson, by deed of gift dated 1770 as recorded in Edgefield Co SC. Now we assign all our rights & title to said negroes of our part to said Michael." Ann signed with her initial A; the witnesses were Jesse Armstrong and James Jones. (Wilkes Co Bk II)
Though John did not leave a will naming his children, researchers seem confident of this list of children. Having 7 sons certainly contributed to the survival of the Burkhalter name. His sons lived in Georgia, leaving many records and descendents.
