James Jim Hogan Burkley, 76, died unexpectedly on April 27, 2010. He was born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Paul and Florence (Hogan) Burkley. He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine J. (Raffaelly) Burkley of Wayland. He was the beloved father of Carla A. Burkley, MD and her husband William B. Talpey, MD both of Auburn, ME and Julie E. Burkley and her husband Craig B. Wohlers both of Brookline. Jim was the cherished grandfather of Emily and Benjamin Talpey of Auburn, ME and Ava and Luke Burkley-Wohlers of Brookline. He is also survived by his brothers, Gene Burkley of Erie, PA and Raymond Burkley of Sunnyvale, CA. Jim has been a resident of Wayland for 45 years. He spent his earlier years in Blairsville, PA. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Rochester in Rochester NY and his MBA from the School of Business Administration at Cornell University. Jim also proudly served his country as a Captain with the United States Air Force. He retired from the Raytheon Company as an International Marketing Manager in the Air Traffic and Control Systems after 44 years of dedicated service. He was very active in the affairs of the Town of Wayland and served as Chairman of the Veterans Committee and was the major organizer for the Veterans Memorial at the Town Building in Wayland. He also was Editor-in-Chief of the Veterans Book of Remembrance and was instrumental in establishing the Wayland High School Veterans Memorial Freedom Prize. This scholarship, which is awarded every Memorial Day, is given to a graduating senior at Wayland High School for the best essay on the topic of the Celebration of Freedom. Jim was an avid gardener and lover of nature. He was a gentle, kind, patient and loving man. Family was the center of his life. He had a wonderful spirit of adventure and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Jim traveled extensively throughout the world and acquired many friends along the way. He will be fondly remembered by his family for his love and caring support leaving many wonderful memories to cherish. A Funeral Mass at Saint Anns Church in Wayland was celebrated on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 1:30 pm. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorial gifts in Jims memory be sent to the James H. Burkley Memorial Scholarship Fund, 7 Meadowbrook Rd, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467 to continue his strong belief in higher education.
